JAAP Stam denied he is feeling the heat as Reading FC boss and challenged the club to find somebody better.

Stam’s position has come into question after Royals’ winless run in the Championship extended to five matches following a 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City today.

Reading have also lost three times in that spell and are languishing in 20th place in the table having won just two of their opening 10 league games.

Stam’s men were booed off the pitch at the final whistle tonight, but the 45-year-old Dutchman appeared unfazed by the criticism.

“It’s the same answer, there is always pressure,” he insisted.

“There are always people talking about your job and that if you don’t win this or that might happen. That’s how it is.

“If the club think they can do better with somebody else then they need to make that decision.”

Stam guided Royals to third in the Championship table last season only to lose to Huddersfield in the play-off final.

And Reading’s poor form this term suggests Stam’s men have not recovered from their Wembley hangover.

“Of course, I want to win games and do the same thing as last season, that’s normal,” added Stam.

“But it’s not that easy. It’s not like, okay, we did that last season so it will be the same this season or maybe even better.

“The players feel the frustration as well, they know what can happen, everyone knows that.

“But if there are discussions about pressure, I don’t really think about it.

“I think about the team and what they need to do to get back into our stride of picking up results again.

“If anybody wants to make a different decision, they need to do that, it’s up to them.

"I will go and work somewhere else.”

James Maddison’s exquisite free kick gave Norwich a 10th minute lead.

But Royals equalised three minutes later when Liam Moore headed home his first of the season from a Sone Aluko free-kick.

However, Cameron Jerome grabbed a 52nd minute winner when he lost Tyler Blackett before heading Maddison’s corner past Vito Mannone.

Chris Gunter did hit the crossbar for the hosts, but Norwich held on, despite seeing substitute Marley Watkins sent off in injury time for a nasty challenge on Gunter.

Stam continued: “We’re disappointed as you can expect. It’s not a good feeling for anyone around the club including the supporters.

“Conceding two goals from set pieces makes it even harder.

“We didn’t have the brightest of starts, we didn’t do the things we’d spoken about.

“But we showed a good reaction to the Norwich goal, equalised and got more into the game.

“We started the second half well but conceded a goal from a corner then it was hard to get back because Norwich sat deeper.

“We aren’t giving away a lot of chances, but every ball into our box looks like being a goal. It makes it hard for yourself to get a result.”

Reading now head into a fortnight’s international break before returning to Championship action with a trip to title-challenging Leeds United on Saturday, October 14.

“It’s always bad to go into an international break like this because you are always thinking about the result,” admitted Stam. “Losing makes it even harder.

“Players go away with their international teams, others are injured and need treatment and those who played today may need some extra rest."

Stam confirmed Jordan Obita will have a knee scan this week, before stating “It doesn’t look too good.”

He also said Yann Kermorgant remains sidelined and is not yet back in full training. “It is weeks rather than months,” he added.
