JON Dadi Bodvarsson urged his Reading FC teammates to make big improvements after coming off the bench to rescue a point against Hull City.

The towering Icelandic international also stressed he is not fazed by criticism after his sensational finish from the edge of the box cancelled out Fraizer Campbell's opener on Saturday afternoon.

It was Bodvarsson's second goal for the Royals since his summer move from Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and his first at Madejski Stadium.

But he was blasted by supporters after squandering a string of chances in a 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City earlier this month.

However, the 25-year-old remains confident in his own ability and says the pressure from fans and being the Royals' only fit centre-forward will not affect him.

"It is always a relief to score a goal," he stated.

"It's been a while so it's good to get on the score sheet and I'm pleased with an okay performance coming off of the bench.

"I try not to let those thoughts disturb me, I put pressure on myself. I'm a big competitor and I have my own goals so that's what I'm focusing on.

"It was good for the atmosphere, for the club and the fans to at least get a point. We don't want to lose points here. The second-half was better but we all know there is big room for improvement.

"When you're a striker you always get criticism if you don't score or if you miss chances, so you have to have a straight back when that happens. It's about yourself, you know what you can do in football and if you miss chances that doesn't mean you're a bad player."

Bodvarsson started the game against Hull on the bench after Stam opted for a forward three of Sone Aluko, Garath McCleary and Roy Beerens.

But he was thrown onto the pitch after 76 minutes as Royals struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

With Royals staring defeat in the face, Bodvarsson latched on to the end of a delicate Aluko through-ball before firing past Allan McGregor into the bottom corner.

Now, having rescued a point for Reading, Bodvarsson hopes he did enough to force his way into Jaap Stam's starting XI for the trip to Millwall on Tuesday night.

"You're never satisfied on the bench," he continued.

"Nobody is, but you respect the gaffer's decision and whether you start the game on the pitch or on the bench you have to be ready to give 100 per cent.

"The manager told me to try and put as much pressure on the defenders as possible and try to score a goal.

"It was a great ball through the defence, I told myself to keep composed and to try and strike the ball as well as possible and thankfully it went in. It was a nice feeling seeing it in the back of the net.

"Compared to the first-half I think a point was probably a fair result. In the second-half we were much better, we still need to improve, we know that. But we know it's bound to happen at times that we'll concede a goal and then it's up to us to show character and respond to it."
