JAAP Stam took a swipe at Reading FC supporters after today’s 1-1 draw with Hull City.

Stam was jeered by a small section of fans while Royals trailed to Fraizer Campbell’s 28th-minute goal during the Championship clash.

Reading threatened only once in the first half when Sone Aluko fired wide and supporters grew increasingly frustrated as the game wore on.

Stam’s substitutions in the second period were also met with a chorus of boos after Royals boss picked a starting XI without a recognised striker.

But the Dutchman insists he will not be influenced by what fans are thinking, and that they should back their team through thick and thin.

“I don’t feel pressure from fans,” he told today’s press conference. “If I need to feel pressure from them and how they react at certain times, it’s a little bit wrong.

“As a fan, you cannot only cheer when it’s going well and for the rest of the day hear nothing from you.

“Fans need to support the team and not cheer against them. Players are working very hard to get results and do well.”

Supporters appeared particularly incensed with Stam’s decision to replace Liam Kelly with Tiago Ilori midway through the second period when striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was sitting on the bench.

The Icelandic striker eventually came on in the 76th minute and crashed home a superb equaliser 10 minutes later for his first goal at Madejski Stadium.

But Stam stressed: “The crowd is not telling me who to bring on. They need to look at themselves and not at me.

“Hopefully they take it as a positive cheer, players know what they need to do.”

Today’s result means Reading remain 18th in the table with two wins from eight Championship games.

But Stam suffered a late blow right at the death when Jordan Obita was sent crashing into the advertising hoardings and was carried off on a stretcher after the final whistle had blown.

Jordan Obita is stretchered off at Madejski Stadium.

Stam confirmed the extent of Obita’s knee injury will not be known until tomorrow.

“He’s not feeling too well,” he stated. “Hopefully it’s not that bad but, from what I saw, it doesn’t look that good.

“He hurt his knee when he slid down the slope at the side of the pitch. We’re assessing it today and we’ll see what the reaction is tomorrow.”

Obita is now a major doubt for Tuesday’s trip to Millwall (7.45pm ko).
