JORDAN Obita has put an end to speculation about his future by penning a new three-year deal with Reading FC today.

The wing-back has caught the eye of several Championship clubs and was reportedly being chased by Birmingham City.

But the 23-year-old, who has risen through Reading's academy ranks, has today penned a fresh contract, keeping him at Madejski Stadium until 2020.

Royals boss Jaap Stam said:  “Jordan was here years before I joined the club and over that time he has proven his ability as a winger, a left-back and a wing back.

“Players with a great left foot are hard to find and his set pieces, delivery into the opposition’s box and passing ability across the pitch were all very important to us as he shared that left side with Tyler last season, so I’m very happy we have been able to keep him at the club with this new contract.”

Obita is yet to make a first-team appearance this season as he recovers from injury.

But he remains a vital part of boss Stams plans as Royals look to re-create last season's success.

Reading Chronicle:

Paul McShane signs a contract extension alongside Reading chief executive, Ron Gourlay.

Ron Gourlay, chief executive, added: "At 23 years of age, Jordan is still a very young player who has the potential to become better and better as a key member of this Reading squad...but he also has invaluable first experience with so many appearances under his belt already.

"So it was important that, in the last year of his contract at the club, we offered him a new deal that his performances last season truly warranted. I’m delighted he’s signed on the dotted line.”

News of Obita's new contract was swiftly followed by confirmation of a one-year contract extension for skipper McShane.

The 31-year-old defender has now been tied down at Madejski Stadium until summer 2019.

Stam added: “Macca entered the last year of his contract this season and it is important to ensure your experienced players remain part of your squad and help the club move forward.

“His mentality was so important to the team as a whole, as was his role in helping us play the ball out from the back – and I’m very pleased he has agreed to remain a key part of this squad and what we want to achieve at Reading.”
