JAAP Stam has confessed he needs a plan ‘B’ as opposition teams have worked Reading FC out.

Royals boss has brought his own brand of possession-based football to Madejski Stadium since his appointment in the summer.

But the Dutchman fears rival clubs know what to expect when they face Reading and that he must work out a different way to win games.

His concerns were realised on Tuesday night when Aston Villa soaked up the pressure before hitting Reading on the break in their 2-1 victory.

Stam conceded: “As I said a couple of weeks ago, the opposition know how we play and they try and make it difficult by playing their own certain way.

“We need to find another way to create chances and score goals ourselves.

“It’s what we are trying to do, but sometimes if you want to play in a certain style to create more chances you have to train for that and work on the details, and you don’t always have time to do that.”

Stam is now considering a change of personnel as Reading attempt to end a run of four Championship games without a win when they go to basement club Rotherham United this Saturday (3pm ko).

The likes of Dominic Samuel, Callum Harriott and Jordan Obita are all pushing for a place in Stam’s side this weekend.

However, Joseph Mendes has been ruled out for at least two weeks with a fresh hamstring injury while Yakou Meite, Jake Cooper and Deniss Rakels remain sidelined.

Stam added: “I’m tempted to freshen things up, we’re always looking at changing players and our style. Players need to be really fit and in good shape if they want a chance of playing.

“We consider every player in the squad and whether we can play him. Sometimes you don’t want to take a chance just yet in making that decision.”
