JAAP Stam admitted his Reading FC players were on different wavelengths during the 1-1 draw with Derby County.

George Evans grabbed his first Royals goal with a 90th minute equaliser after ex-Reading striker Matej Vydra had put the Rams ahead on the hour.

But Stam's men were rarely at their best all afternoon and lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

The Dutchman said: “You want to do things in a certain way and to run in behind defences. But when they are not doing it, it means defenders are dropping off.

“We were trying to achieve that but players think a certain way and sometimes they don't think what they need to do in certain situations, and you lose opportunities.

“We have to work on that so everyone knows what they have to do at the right time so we can create chances.”

Royals looked like they would lose their unbeaten record at Madejski Stadium after Derby lead through Vydra's 61st minute opener going into the closing stages.

But Reading snatched a point at the death when Evans stabbed home from a John Swift corner for his first goal in a hooped jersey.

Stam added: “I think you saw 'Plan B' today. We were 1-0 down, put another striker on, played long balls to the front where Yann Kermorgant and Joseph Mendes are strong in the air.

“They knock the ball down for our midfielders and we got the goal.

“We were happy with the point in the end. We knew Derby would drop in deep.

“A lot of the time we got the ball it went straight back to our defenders when we could have played forward, so we need to improve in that area.

“But we played against a good Derby side. We put some good crosses into the box, but they weren't clear cut chances.

“I don't think Derby had many chances in the first half. We saw their game against Cardiff and they had a lot more possession than they did today.

“They made it very difficult for us. They have quality players in midfield and up front.”
