DUTCH star Roy Beerens has promised to light up the Madejski Stadium as Reading FC prepare to open their Skybet Championship at home to Preston North End on Saturday (3pm), writes Anthony Smith.

The 28-year-old winger, who joined Royals from Hertha Berlin last month, is renowned for his fast feet and fondness for a stepover, and he hopes to become a fans favourite in Berkshire.

He told The Chronicle: “I like to entertain, I think it’s my kind of style and how I like to play.

“Hopefully the people at Reading will like it.

“It’s how I was at my other clubs and how I am in a 4-3-3 formation. It’s how I grew up and I want to keep doing that for the fans because they like to be entertained.

“I like to get in one-on-one situations and take my opponent on. It’s exciting and supporters like to see that.”

Twice-capped by the Netherlands, Beerens is hoping his fellow Dutchman Jaap Stam will play him out wide in a bid to add some attacking verve to Royals.

He revealed: “I want to play on the wing, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s left or right, – that’s up to the manager.

“For the last couple of years I played on the right, but before that I played on the left. The main thing is I will do my best in any position.”

Reading has seen something of a Dutch invasion recently, with Brian Tevreden taking over as director of football, Stam coming in as manager and Joey van den Berg, Danzell Gravenberch and Beerens also joining the playing ranks.

But Beerens revealed: “There’s a Dutch presence here at the moment, but nationality doesn’t matter, this is English football.

“Saying that, it helps a lot if I need to know something such as strategy, because they can explain it to me in Dutch as well as in English.

“We want to play our own strategy and maybe it will take a couple of games, but everybody supports it so we have to work it out.

“It’s not like we only want to play football, we also have to defend well.

“But in order to create chances we want to play with a Dutch style.

“Not too much of course, but we want that in our strategy.”

And with the big kick-off set for Saturday, Beerens is relishing his first taste of Championship football as the Lilywhites come to town.

He revealed: ““I’ve seen some games but not too many. But I have heard a lot of stories about the Championship in Holland.

“I’m looking forward to it and we will see how it goes.”
