BRIAN McDermott revealed Reading FC left no stone unturned in the build-up to their FA Cup victory against Walsall, writes Anthony Smith.

Royals brushed aside League One Saddlers 4-0 on Saturday to secure a fifth-round home tie against West Bromwich Albion or Peterborough United.

Sean O'Driscoll's side had already beaten three Championship sides this season after dumping Nottingham Forest and Brighton out of the Capital One Cup and beating Brentford in the FA Cup third round.

But they never looked like pulling off another upset last weekend as a Matej Vydra brace plus goals from Hal Robson-Kanu and Danny Williams sealed a comfortable win for McDermott's men at Madejski Stadium.

Royals' boss said: “Walsall are a good team. I've seen them a lot, I know what they're about, they play some really good football and I hope they get promotion this season.

“But we did our homework on them.

"It was a bit scrappy to start with and the first goal was going to be important. It was a little bit disjointed up to that stage, but Hal got us in front with a great finish.

"I was delighted for Danny and Vyds scored a couple of goals again.”

Vydra's two goals took his FA Cup tally to six this season including five in his last two ties.

He netted a hat-trick in the 5-2  FA Cup fourth-round replay win against Huddersfield, and almost got another on Saturday after seeing a third goal scrubbed out for offside.

“I told Vyds at half-time I thought he was going to get a hat-trick,” explained McDermott. “And he did, if you count the one he tapped in off Danny's foot from an offside position.

"Vyds was upset he'd taken that one off Danny, because it was going in, and he was devastated because he's such a team player, such a great lad.

"But we showed some real quality late in the game to finish the tie off. Chris Gunter's cross at the end was a fantastic for Vyds' header, so I'm really pleased for the lads and the fans.

"At times our football was very good, especially leading up to the goals, we're delighted to get through a tricky game.

"The most important thing in a cup tie is to get through. We've done our job so all in all it was a good day."

Reading will now play with West Brom or Peterborough, who are set to meet in a fourth round replay next week after drawing 2-2 on Saturday.

All fifth-round ties will take place on the weekend between Friday, February 19 and Monday 22.

McDermott, who took Reading to two FA Cup quarter finals during his prfevious spell in charge, declared: "I'm a manager who loves the FA Cup. We've had really good runs at Reading in recent years and last year we got to the semi-finals - a fantastic run.

"We're in the next round and we'll look forward to that - it's always very exciting for everyone, including me.”

FA Cup fifth round draw: Chelsea v Manchester City; Reading v West Brom or Peterborough; Watford v Leeds United; Shrewsbury Town v Manchester United; Blackburn Rovers v Liverpool or West Ham United; Tottenham v Crystal Palace; Arsenal v Hull City; Bournemouth v Everton.
