DANNY Williams insists his Reading FC teammates will not be getting carried away by their excellent start to the season.

Steve Clarke’s men had won five of their last six Championship matches and were third in the table before the current international break.

Royals also closed the gap on second-placed Middlesbrough to just two points by beating Aitor Karanka’s side 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium last time out.

That results followed away wins at Burnley, Bristol City and Brentford plus a 5-1 home victory over Ipswich Town, with the only blip in that run coming in a 1-0 home loss to Derby County, which saw striker Orlando Sa sent off in the first half.

But while bookmakers are slashing the odds on Reading being promoted this season, Williams is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

The USA international, who scored against Boro after just 15 seconds, explained: “We’re on a good run and it’s important to win our home games.

“We struggled at home last season but this season our away form has been brilliant.

“But you can never rest in this division. We saw Derby dominate the Championship last season then go on a bad run and drop out of the top six.

“It would be good if we can stay in the top few places, but we have to remain calm.

“It’s too early in the season to dream, we will let other people do that.

“I concentrate on the hard work on the training ground and see what happens.”

He added: “We dropped some unnecessary points at the start of the season against Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Leeds.

“I thought we dominated those games but we didn’t get the right result.

“But I think we got those points back by beating Burnley and Middlesbrough and we have the chance to pick up even more points over these next three games against Charlton, Rotherham and Fulham.”

Royals return to league action this Saturday when they host Charlton Athletic at Madejski Stadium (3pm) and then face back-to-back trips to Rotherham United next Tuesday (7.45pm) then Fulham on Saturday week.

Williams continued: “It’s for other people and the media to dream and it’s the media’s job to get the fans excited.

“The manager said already that we must concentrate on the hard work on the training ground. But I think our team is good enough to beat anyone in the Championship.

“Not many teams will get three points at Burnley like we did and Middlesbrough were the best team we have played this season. They were well organised, strong, good passers and a good midfield.

“We knew we had to do a lot of things right to get a result but a clean sheet always gives you the chance.

“We have enough quality up front and can hurt any team.”

Meanwhile, Reading trio Hal Robson-Kanu, Chris Gunter and Oliver Noorwood have sealed their places at the Euro 2016 finals in France.

Robson-Kanu and Gunter were both involved in Wales 2-0 defeat in Bosnia on Saturday when results elsewhere went in their favour to send Chris Coleman’s Dragons through.

Norwood grabbed an assist for Northern Ireland in their 3-1 win over Greece last Thursday which also sealed their place in the finals.

  • OUT-of-favour Reading FC striker Simon Cox, 28, has joined Bristol City on loan until January 2016.

Manager Steve Clarke said: “This arrangement is good for all parties and we wish Simon well in his loan spell at Bristol City.”

  •  JAKE Cooper, 20, has signed a new contract with Reading FC until summer 2018.
