Reading FC have announced that Eamonn Dolan is currently undergoing chemotherapy after having a tumour removed from his bladder.

The 47-year-old has led the club's hugely successful academy since 2004, and spent time working alongside Steve Clarke with the first-team last season.

A statement released by the club, said: “Our Academy Manager Eamonn Dolan is currently undergoing a course of chemotherapy after having a tumour removed from his bladder.

“Everyone at the club and our supporters will be fully focused on giving him our total support to get him recovered as quickly as possible. He is a very important member of our club and has done an outstanding job over the last ten years.

“Eamonn would like to thank everyone at Reading Football Club for the superb support he has already received and also for the medical care he has been given and looks forward to making a full recovery as soon as possible.”

Dolan is an extremely popular person amongst playing staff and fans, and supporters have already set in motion a show of support.

A minute's applause has been planned for the upcoming Leeds United game on Sunday, with the 21st minute chosen as a fitting time due to his work with the U21s over the past decade.

The idea has gained popularity over social media and has been pushed by the Tilehurst End, who wrote on their website: “As a show of support, we here at The Tilehurst End are encouraging everyone at the Madejski Stadium against Leeds United on Sunday to applaud on the 21st minute of the game, given his incredible work for the U21s.

“If you’re getting involved, use the #21forDolan hashtag on Twitter.”
