The 19-year-old was given the nod after 30 minutes at the iPro Stadium following an injury to fellow u21s teammate Jack Stacey.

Fosu refused to be overawed by the occasion and constantly ran at his opponents both on the left side and the right side of the Reading midfield.

There was an end product as well, with Fosu twice going close to notching his first Reading goal.

The tricky winger looks an exciting prospect and he’s determined to build on his superb debut to become a regular face in the first team squad at the Madejski Stadium next season.

“The first team is where I want to be,” he said. “So I just have to keep my feet on the ground, keep working hard, keep pushing on and hopefully I’ll get further chances.

“It was a good experience and I just tried to express myself which is what the gaffer told me to do.

“At half-time he encouraged me to do that again so I just thought I’ll do what I normally do and I nearly scored, hopefully that happens next time.

“I was nervous to begin with. The tempo was quite quick so I had to adjust to that but once I picked the pace of the game up, I kicked on.

“I thought I was ready and I’m just happy with the team performance in the last game of the season so it couldn’t have gone any better.”

Fosu became the 11th academy graduate to make their first team debut this season on Saturday, clear evidence of the excellent work going on in the youth system.

Reading U21s have won seven in a row and were promoted on Tuesday evening, and Fosu believes the winning mentality from the u21s squad can help Reading’s youngsters be a positive influence on the first team when they breakthrough.

“Martin Kuhl always demands a winning mentality through the Academy,” he added. “We get used to that feeling from a young age and when you are used to winning it stands you in good stead for the future.

“I just felt I’d do what I normally do when I came on and it went well, it couldn’t have gone better.”

Jem Karacan, who skippered the side, paid tribute to Fosu and said his performance was a deserved reward for his hard work and patience over the course of a long season.

“Tariqe was unbelievable,” he said. “What a performance from him after coming on just over 30 minutes in.

“I’m delighted for him, he’s waited 45 games this season for that chance and he’s taken it.”
