TEAM GB's women hockey team used all their character to win an Olympic bronze medal in the third place play-off with New Zealand.

After the heartache of losing their semi-final to Argentina in what was a below-par performance, the GB girls produced at the second time of asking to win 3-1.

It is the first hockey medal for British women since Barcelona 1992.

The score remained goalless at half-time and after an early scare in the second period in which the visitors hit the post, GB took control of the game with Reading's Alex Danson deflecting in a penalty corner after 45 minutes.

Crista Cullen then doubled the advantage shortly before the hour and Sarah Thomas wrapped things up with another exquisite deflection at the far post seven minutes from time.

Stacy Mickelson scored the consolation for New Zealand.

Captain Kate Walsh, who still has to wear the protective face mask, was in floods of tears at the end of the match in what has been an emotional tournament for the Reading defender.
