READING Town manager Roddy Slater was fuming after seeing his side lose 4-1 on Monday for the second time in 48 hours.
Slater dubbed the defeat to Ascot United in the Hellenic Premier as ‘embarrassing’ and is looking to put things right in their first proper training session.
A combination of midweek matches and the Reading Festival has meant the Scours Lane pitch has been unavailable for training. Monday’s defeat was Town’s third in a row and Slater admits the team are paying for not converting their chances.
Ascot took the lead within five minutes and capitalised on some slack defending after the interval with two headed goals in six minutes to make it 3-0. The fourth went in two minutes from time but an own goal in the dying moments handed Reading a consolation goal.
Slater declared: “Monday’s result was embarassing. I was so mad with how we laid down, that wasn’t like us.
“Even at 3-0 down I could see us getting something out the game because we were creating chances but the fourth deflated our confidence.
“A week in football can change things. We were winning and then a week later we’ve lost three and conceded 12, that’s just not acceptable.
“The guys are honest enough to realise they need to work hard in training. I’m really looking forward to Thursday because we’ve not had a proper training session.”
Town were not at their best as Tim Standing slotted the ball past Reading’s young keeper Chris Rackley on four minutes.
Marcus Richardson and Danny Seaward spurned the chances to equalise while Reading’s defence went to sleep as Sam McIntyre and Jon Bennett were allowed to head home in the 53rd and 59th minute respectively to make it 3-0.
However, Roddy Slater’s men did not give up and continued to create chances but they were well and truly sunk when Bennett turned in his second of the game and Ascot’s fourth with two minutes remaining.
Two days earlier Reading crashed out of the FA Cup with the same scoreline against Newport Isle of Wight.
Four second half goals
proved their undoing after a goalless first half in which they created the better openings.
Goals came from Wayne Newnham (2), Charlie Smeeton and Scott Sampson while Danny Seaward notched the consolation.
