HARLEQUINS' Ollie Lindsay-Hague scored an 84th minute try to condemn London Irish to an agonising defeat in their LV= Cup opener at Twickenham Stoop.
The game looked destined for a draw with the scores locked at 19-19 after 80 minutes but both sides continued to play on and it was the hosts who snatched victory at the death.
Quins started the match brightly and took the lead when Ben Urdapilleta touched down, with Rory Clegg adding the extras.
Tom Homer cut the deficit with a penalty but the 21-year-old then missed his second effort from just over 50 yards.
He made amends with an easier attempt to make it 7-6, only for Clegg to restore Quins' four-point advantage with a penalty of his own.
Clegg, standing in at fly-half for rested All Black Nick Evans, had a chance to put the hosts further ahead at the break but hit the post with his penalty attempt.
Quins started the second-half strongly and Clegg put them 13-6 ahead with a three-pointer.
Homer kept Irish in touch with two more penalties as Joe Ansbro came off the bench to make his Exiles debut.
Clegg replied to Homer's efforts by kicking his third penalty of the day but David Sisi looked to have won it for Irish when he touched down with seven minutes remaining.
Homer converted to make the score 19-16, only for Clegg to draw Quins level with a penalty.
The clock counted past 80 minutes and it was Lindsay-Hague who sparked celebrations amongst the home fans with a last-gasp try.
Irish are in LV= Cup action again next week when they host Newcastle Falcons on Sunday (3pm ko).
