JUSTIN Bishop will be London Irish's new defence coach from the start of the 2011/12 season.

Bishop has spent the last two seasons as Assistant Manager of the London Irish Academy and made 279 appearances for Exiles as a player.

He will take over from Dave Ellis, who is set to continue as defence coach for France.

Speaking about his new role, Bishop said: "I have gained a lot of great memories at London Irish over the years as a player and as a coach and working alongside Neal Hatley with the Academy has been a pleasure.

"The club has been a big part of my life and I am delighted that I am able to give something back, working alongside Toby [Booth, head coach] to help London Irish reach its full potential and the heights all involved know it is capable of."

Booth added: "I have known and worked with Justin for a long time and he is a great asset to our coaching set up.

"He has always played an important role in organising our defence so he is more than ready to take on this role with the senior squad in a full time capacity. He always shows a great deal of passion which will only put us in a positive position and drive us to success over the coming seasons."

Bishop will officially take up his role on a permanent contract when the squad returns for pre-season training in July.
