TOMMY Bell helped himself to 32 points and teenage wing sensation Joe Cokanasiga scored an early try-of-the-season contender as London Irish emphatically hammered hosts London Scottish 62-12 on Sunday, writes Richard Ashton.

It was a seventh consecutive Greene King IPA Championship victory for Nick Kennedy’s men – and a ninth in all competitions – as they returned to the top of the table.

Exiles made a perfect start when their impressive rolling maul allowed David Paice to dot down, with Bell’s first kick putting the visitors 7-0 up.

James Marshall’s attempted chip was charged down shortly after, but this merely let his half-back partner Brendan McKibbin hoover up the ball and run in from 30 yards.

Scottish full-back Peter Lydon sliced through a gap to score from close range as the home side hit back, but this preceded a moment of absolute brilliance from Cokanasiga.

On his league debut, he collected the ball in his own 22 and left a series of opponents in his wake in finishing a stunning solo try.

Bell kicked the conversion and a brace of penalties to extend the lead to 27-5, and the former Leicester Tiger then secured the try bonus point on the stroke of half time, again converting.

Cokanasiga then turned provider for Fijian outside centre Aseli Tikoirotuma to score Irish’s opening try of the second half, coming on the hour mark. Another Bell conversion made it 41-5.

The visitors refused to let up, and after a wave of attacks, replacement scrum-half Scott Steele went over from the base of a ruck, Bell yet again on target with the conversion.

The half-century was brought up by Scotland international Blair Cowan, the flanker showing good pace to outrun his opponents before dotting down.

It was Bell who had the last word for the table-toppers, going over with three minutes to play before maintaining his perfect kicking record.

London Scottish did add a late consolation try through Michael Van Vuuren, but it was well and truly Irish’s day.

London Irish host unbeaten, second-placed Yorkshire Carnegie this coming Saturday (3pm).
