  • THERE was plenty of rain at West Berks last week, but the course stood up well and there were a number of competitions and matches completed.

With the club announcing on Twitter the course was ‘open – just’ on Saturday morning and requesting members carry their clubs, professional Paul Simpson arranged a ‘three club and putter’ competition to replace the planned stableford.

Despite the conditions, the scores were remarkably high as Ian Lewin won with 37 points. Mark Motion took second place with 36 and John Harris was third with 35.

The seniors played their first friendly match of the season last Wednesday at home to Wrag Barn and returned a remarkable clean sweep, winning 8-0.

West Berks will play Badgemore Park, the team they beat at home in the quarter-finals last year on the way to winning the title, in the M4 Seniors Winter League.

The semi final will be played at Temple GC on Monday, and the winners will play either South Bucks or the winners of Pyrford and Oak Park in the final.

Dan Bowsher won a high scoring men’s stableford with 43 points, Chris Hunt took second place with 41 and Colin Harrison was two shots behind third.

Paul Barton triumphed in the midweek stableford with 37 points, while Brian Davis followed him home with 33– taking second spot from Andrew Kerr on count-back.

The team comprising Martin Neville, Aileen Summers and Rob Small won the midweek competition with a combined score of 139.

Barry Francis, Carol Sparvell and Patrick Wilmore were runners-up.
