THE second HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event staged by Caversham Heath last week was another runaway success as 16-year-old Min Kyu Kim claimed the PentaHotels Championship.

The 16-year-old Korean carded rounds of 65, 67, 73 (-14) to win the championship by two shots to become the Tour’s youngest ever champion with his first EuroPro Tour win.

The only dampener on a splendid tournament was the poor weather on the final day, which saw lightning suspend play twice.

Kim weathered the storm to put an electric display in on the front nine of the final round, carding five birdies in the process. However, his back nine was anything but electric – bogies on the 13th and 14th reduced his lead to four shots. However, back-to-back birdies in response re-established his commanding lead before a double bogey on the 18th.

“I am so happy and really impressed with my win,” said Kim, who earned £10,000 as well as a brand new Motocaddy S3 PRO electric trolley with lithium battery, Bushnell Pro X2 Range Finder and Bolle sunglasses.

Kim, who carded a superb eight-under-par (65), and collected an incredible eight birdies in a bogey-less first round, climbs to fifth in the tour rankings, from which the top five at the end of the season earn promotion to the Challenge Tour.

Runner-up Stiggy Hodgson (The Wisley Golf Club) carded a solid final round of four-under-par to finish 12-under-par, but he rarely threatened Kim’s lead, who started the day four shots clear.

Third was Rotherham’s Jonathan Thomson who finished on 208 (-11).

Goring and Streatley’s Matthew Chapman, Alex Lodge (Calcot) and the Caversham Heath duo of Darren Bartlett and Barney Wytchard all failed to make the cut which reduced the field to the top 50 after two rounds.

l ARCHIE Smith (3hcp) shot 10 pars and three birdies in his nett 72 which won Division One of the Weekend Medal on Sunday.

Runner-up was Gareth Goodall (5hcp) with nett 74. Third was Will Tate (4hcp), on countback from Callum Peart (6hcp) and Dave Williams (4hcp), all with nett 75.

Division Two winner was Tim Bicknell (12hcp) with nett 71. Second was David Cuthbertson (12hcp) with nett 72 and third was Wayne Mayers (11hcp), on countback from Ashley Smith (17hcp), both with nett 77.

Javier Dieguez (20hcp took the top spot in Division Three, on countback from Samuel Kpani-Addy (27hcp), both with nett 74. Third was Jim McGiveron (22hcp) with nett 78.

Twos were recorded by John Casey, Jonathan Fleming, Barry Reynolds and Smith (all on the 8th hole) and by Cuthbertson, Craig Hutt, Mayers and Reynolds (all on the 17th hole).
