TONY Coventry shot 81 to win the Senior Championship at West Berks for the fifth time, beating Degga Smith by one shot.

Andy Robbins and Charles Dixon tied for third place on 84 while Keith Wilkins (18hcp) won the nett prize scoring gross 86, nett 68.

Nine-handicapper Coventry’s five wins cover 17 years since his first success back in 2000 and this formidable record and longevity is put into perspective when considering that there are only seven other multiple winners of the event and no-one has won more than twice.

Meanwhile, Joe Simpson shot a three-under-par 70 to win the July medal the week after he qualified for the national final of the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy.

In the medal he was level par on the front nine before a back nine of seven pars, a birdie and an eagle set up victory for the 20-year-old scratch handicapper who won by two shots from new senior champion Coventry.

Jay Kitching was a further shot behind in third place.

A few days earlier Simpson scored a one-over-par 71 at Sonning Golf Club to qualify for the national final of the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy, a competition organised by England Golf, to be held at Woodhall Spa on August 14.

Making it a good week for the Simpson family, father Paul Simpson, the head professional at West Berks, won the Pro-Am at West Hill.

West Berks' Hillman Trophy team recorded an excellent 5-2 win at Farnham Park to move into the quarter finals of the competition.

They will be at home to either Newbury & Crookham or Fernhill AGC, the artisans who play out of Swinley Forest.

Phil George won the Saturday stableford with 42 points, four shots clear of John Harris while Simon Clifford, with 36 points, beat Andrew Grayson on count-back to take third place.

Peter Hill won the midweek stableford with 42 points, Brian Davis was a point behind second while David Dyson with 36 beat Paul Barton to take third spot.

The ladies team beat Caversham Heath 3-1 at home in an inter-club friendly while Margaret Sumner, Helen Bell and Derrick Perrin won the mixed midweek competition with Aileen Summers, Mike Sparvell and Colin Bell taking second place.
