FOUR members took part in the Longest Day Challenge at Reading Golf Club last Wednesday.

Robert Bunting, Jason Macbeth, Tim Newton and David Jones took on the blistering heat to complete the 72-hole challenge in memory of Rob’s dad Nigel for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The four-ball set out just after 8am and walked more than 20 miles before completing the 72nd hole just after 8.30pm.

Donations so far have surpassed £1,750.

Meanwhile, John Robinson (7hcp) beat 81 rivals to claim the West Challenge Cup with a nett 64 on Saturday.

John Allen (25hcp) took the runners-up spot on count-back, with John Rusby (18hcp) also finishing with a nett 65.

Two other players – fourth-placed Ryan Webb (24hcp) and Colin Lawes (12hcp) – recorded the same score, two clear of Julian Pardoe (13hcp).

Russell Higgs (7hcp) took seventh on count-back from Mike Jones (16hcp).

Caversham Heath

STUART Barnett continued his good form by winning the Abbott Hill Competition at Caversham Heath at the weekend.

Barnett (15hcp), who won a nine-hole competition earlier in June, scored 38 stableford points on Saturday and 35 points on Sunday for a combined total of 73 points to win by one.

Runner-up was Paul West (6hcp) with rounds of 34 and 38 points for 72 , while joint third were Gordon Berry (18hcp) and Jon Winstanley (10hcp), both with 38 and 32 for 70.

On the Saturday, Barnett scorched around the back nine in 25 points, recording nine pars and two birdies – each birdie securing four points.

Maplehurham

ALEX Luxon claimed a six-shot victory in the men’s club championships at Mapledurham.

Keith Newby (13hcp) led the way after round one with a stunning 74, but Luxon continued the fine form he has shown throughout the season to shoot a fantastic level par 69 in round two.

Max Teixeira was runner-up and David Mehigan third.

Newby followed up his nett 61 with a solid 67 to claim the honours in that competition

In the ladies’ tournament Julie Parsons and Teresa Taylor both shot fine 79s in their first round, but it was the former who managed to follow it up with the same score to seal a six-shot success from Taylor.

Danielle McGeoghegan took third place with an impressive round of 80 in round two.

Parsons also won the handicap competition with nett 68 and 70, with Taylor in second having recorded rounds of 66 and 74.

Irene Manson took third place with 77 and an outstanding 64.
