SONNING GC held their captain’s weekend which featured a trio of competitions.

Former Ladies’ captain Ros Gurney won the five-day members’ stableford tournament on the Friday, racking up 36 points to beat David Fidler (34) into second. Mike Reeves finished third a further point back.

The mixed stableford competition on Saturday was played under the rules of the two best scores per four-ball, but the lady player having to score on at least six holes.

The winners, captained by Pauline Valsler and supported by Keith Medhurst, David Valsler and Wayne Adamson, came in with 95 points – an astonishing 23 better than handicap.

They picked up the Lewis-Wearing Cup, while second place – five points back – went to Grace Reid, accompanied by Malcolm Reid, Keith Conway and Jerry Robson. In third with 88 points were Michelle James, with Kevin James, Peter Jones and Ian Gale.

The Juniors’ competition was won by Megan Hewinson with 36 points.

Adamson completed a weekend to remember by securing the Captain’s Cup on Sunday, overcoming tough conditions to score 39 points. He also won the nearest-the-pin prize after hitting his approach shot on the ninth to 10 inches.

That left him one clear of Tom Shone, who in turn was one clear of Michael Harrison.

Captain Bill Branagh hailed the weekend as a fantastic success and said: “There were more than 250 competitors involved in the three days of competition, which is absolutely fantastic. Congratulations to all the prizewinners, they are really well deserved.

“As club captain, I have thoroughly enjoyed this past weekend, and I hope everyone else did to.

“I had a lot of help in putting the weekend together and would particularly like to thank Matt Smith, Tom Jennings and the rest of the green-keeping team for presenting the course in immaculate condition. I’d also like to thank ladies’ captain Barbara Shanks, Jonathan Dunn and Andy George.”
