JONATHAN Burnett held off the challenge of Philip Beresford to win the Shah Cup at Caversham Heath.

Burnett (17hcp) clinched the cup on countback on the back nine from Beresford (9hcp), both with 38 points.

Beresford won Division One with halves of 21 and 17 points, edging out Mike Capaldi (10hcp) with 36 points. Third was Matthew Brakspear (7hcp), on countback from Michael Lamb (10hcp), both with 35.

Burnett’s 38 points was enough to take Division Two, one clear of John Purnell (14hcp) who was second on countback from Andrew Robertson (11hcp), both with 37.

New ladies’ captain Angela Adamson (34hcp) won Division Three with 36 points, two clear of runner-up Steve Wright (25hcp). Third was Daniel Dover (20hcp), on countback from Glen Dudman (19hcp), both with 33 points.

James Walker (10hcp) shot a nett 66 to win Division One of the May Weekend Medal on Sunday. Runner-up was Will Tate (5hcp) with nett 68, three clear of James McGiveron.

Duncan Mee (15hcp) secured the top spot in Division Two with nett 76. Christopher Searle (15hcp) was only a shot behind, while Richard Monk (15hcp) took third place on countback from Luke O’Brien (14hcp), Neil McAllister (17hcp), Dennis Sunderland (11hcp), Kevin Allaway (12hcp) and Jonathan Denning (14hcp), all with nett 78.

Division Three winner was Kevin Iremonger (27hcp) with nett 69. Second was Jason Springer (27hcp) and third was Jim McGiveron (21hcp) with nett 76.

Darren Bonney claimed the honours on countback in Division One of the Midweek Medal with nett 72. Brian Morrison (18hcp) was second and third was Shaun Wharton (14hcp), on countback from John Davies (18hcp), both with nett 74.

Division Two winner was Simon Dicketts (21hcp) with nett 73. Runner-up was Lyyne Rumbold (19hcp), on countback from Jeanette Taylor (32hcp), both with nett 74.

Rumbold and Taylor were also involved in the battle for top spot in the Ladies’ Stableford, with Rumbold getting the nod with 38 points. Taylor was runner-up with 36 points and third was Pamela Stapeley (22hcp) with 34.

  • PAUL Wessligh won the Southern Seniors Open played at Theale Golf Club.
  • ROB Bridgeman won the men’s May medal at West Berks with a nett 71, downing Chris Ward on countback, while Alex Anderson was a further shot back in third place.

Harry White won the midweek medal with a nett 69, three shots clear of Lin Kay who took second place with Geoff Pudner third on 78.

  • SONNING Golf Club Vets lost 3.5-2.5 to hosts East Berks in their second league fixture of the season.

Paul Cain and Alan Tubb halved their opening match, but Paul Power and Paul Gold lost the next while the pairs of John Gill and John Cornish plus Mike Burlow and Mike Ferris finished one down.

John Butcher and Bab Farquar won the next one up then Dave Smithfield and Peter Coe secured a 6&4 victory to finish on a high.

Sonning 2nds secured a 4-2 win against East Berks 2nds.

Richard Shillito and Gareth Edwards beat Martin Green and Andrew Cousins 3&2, Kevin Bunch and Richard Ginn beat Mike Robson and John Schofield 3&1, Peter Hodges and Trevor Smith lost 2&1 to Josh Edmundson and Joe O'Farrell, Sean Green and Mark Sawyer won 3&2 against Nick Lane and Dan Willis, John Gill and Tom Morrison lost 3&2 to Mark Law and Craig McKenzie and Ian Brindley and Wayne Edwards beat Ian Carter and Ken Hopkins 3&2.

Sonning 3rds also overcame East Berks 3rds 4-2 in their first home match.

It included victories for Chris Sandy and Keith Avenall (4&3), Colin Hodges and Simon Nessling (2 up), Mike Townend and Keith Merrigan (3&1).
