WEST Berks seniors beat Weybrook Park 3-1 at Donnington Grove to reach the final of the M4 Seniors Winter League.

Joe Simpson won the April medal, shooting a superb four-under-par 69 to defeat Jason Kendal with a gross 76, nett 72 and Pete Dye with a gross 86, nett 72.

Graham Coe won the men’s midweek medal with gross 83, nett 70, Andy Robbings was second with 77, nett 73 and Colin Harrison third with 92, nett 74.

In the ladies’ competitions, Sandy Miller won the midweek stableford with 38 points, Carol Sparvell was one shot behind in second place and Georgie Seaman third with 35.

Meanwhile, Deb Weddell won the medal with a nett 71, Jan Francis was second with 75 and Miller was third on 77.

In the team events, the men beat Studley Wood 4-2, the seniors beat Donnington Grove by the same score, the scratch team lost their first game of the season in Division One of the Reading and District Scratch League 5-2 away to East Berks, while the mixed team won 7-1 at home against Newbury and Crookham.

  • STEVE Woolaway claimed the top prize in Division One of the April Midweek Medal at Caversham Heath.

Woolaway (14hcp) finished with a nett 70, one shot clear of runner-up Andy Horn (15hcp) on nett 71.

Third was Mark Reynold (16hcp), on countback from Matthew Murphy (15hcp), both with nett 72.

Murphy was in prime position with just two holes remaining, but triple bogeyed both the remaining holes.

Division Two winner was Garfield Bryant (19hcp) with nett 72. Javier Dieguez (21hcp) was second and Tony Joyce (23hcp) was third, on countback from Fung Yee Sarah Lau (22hcp), both with nett 75.

  • HILDA Freeman won the Kath Rowbotham Spoons at Sonning with 42 points, six clear of Barbara Shanks, who was in turn one ahead of Michelle James.

Tom Shone’s nett 67 earned him a two-shot win in the midweek medal. Peter Davidson was second and Andrew Brymer third, a shot further back.
