JUNIOR Archie Smith claimed the honours in the Champions Cup – an invitation-only competition – held at Caversham Heath last Saturday.

Smith (6hcp) went round in nett 70 to win by three shots from new ladies’ captain Angela Adamson (35hcp). Third was Colin Stoute (14hcp) with 75.

There were tight finishes in two of the three divisions in the weekend medal.

In Division One, Jonathon Fleming (4hcp) held off the challenge of Philip Beresford (10hcp) and Joseph Sicheri (9hcp) to take the top prize with a nett 72. Beresford was a shot further back with Sicheri shooting 74. Division Two winner was Barry Reynolds (14hcp) with nett 74, one clear of runner-up John Endersby (18hcp), who was second on countback from Craig Hutt (14hcp) and Matthew Perry (14hcp).

Neil Scott (19hcp) won Division Three with nett 72. Keith Hedges (20hcp) was second, on countback from Nick Wilson (22hcp), both with nett 76.

The team of Andrew Parker, Mario Atkinson, Dennis Sunderland and Alan Kennealy stormed to success with 57.6 points in the Captains’ Farewell event which raised £7,317 for the Captains’ Charity, Parkinson’s UK.

Runners-up were Matt Gibson, Greg McDonald, Paul Lobban and Debbie Harris with 58.5 points, and third were the team of Jonathan Fleming, Santiago Fernandez-Garcia, Duncan McDonald and Angela Adamson with 59.4 points.

Nearest the pin on the 8th green was Stuart Barnett; on the 13th was Matt Perry; and on the 17th, Paul Lobban.

  • WEST Berks seniors won 3-1 at home to Badgemore Park to win a place in the semi-finals of the M4 Seniors Winter League.

Meanwhile, Alexander Anderson overcame Wednesday’s appalling weather to score 36 points and beat Stephen Jones on countback to win the men’s midweek stableford. Ian Boyd was third with 28 points.
