JAN Francis and Georgie Seaman won the ladies’ winter league at West Berks.

The competition comprises 10 four-ball better ball, matchplay rounds, and the couple held off the challenge of Gale McAuley and Mary Harwood and Sandy Miller and Renee Wheeler who were joint second.

Francis and Tina Mulford finished as Division Two runners-up after they joined 30 other ladies from all over the UK to play in the Yonex LPGT (Lady Pairs Golf Tour), held over three days at La Finca & Las Ramblas in Alicante, Spain.

In the men’s M4 Seniors Winter Golf League, West Berks returned to winning ways following a 2½-1½ defeat at Donnington Grove with a fine 4-0 victory away to Goring and Streatley.

With two home games remaining West Berks stand an excellent chance of progressing to the semi-finals for the third year running.

Carol Sparvell, Chris Capel, Aileen Summers and Patrick Wilmore won the midweek Valentines Trophy.

Trophy sponsor Ann Bell was close to winning her own event, finishing second on count-back, accompanied by Barry Lancaster, Deb Weddell and Derrick Perrin, while Jane Wilmore, Tim Francis, Simone Diamond and Brian Grace were third.

West Berks Golf Club has raised £3,295.69 for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

Seaman, the 2016 ladies’ captain, presented the cheque to Lady Oaksey, the widow of Lord Oaksey, John Francome the seven-time National Hunt Champion Jockey and vice president of the charity, and Lisa Hancock, the fund’s CEO.

Founded in 1964, the IJF was the brainchild of Lord Oaksey and has since spent in excess of £18m helping more than 1,000 injured jockeys.

Oaksey House, opened in Lambourn in 2009, is a state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre built in his memory.

Seaman said: “I chose the Injured Jockeys Fund because WBGC is surrounded by the activities of the racing industry and I watched Oaksey House being built when I lived in Lambourn so it is a cause dear to my heart.

“I knew that the members of West Berks would be generous because of the many local connections including some famous names.

"I was not disappointed and I thank everyone for their generosity and support.”

The IJF was the joint beneficiary of the 2016 captains’ charity fund and a similar sum was raised for West Berkshire Mencap.
