NEW Calcot Park Golf Club captain Barry Sharp struck an impressive shot down the middle of the fairway as he completed the ceremonial drive-in.

The 13-handicapper had earlier enjoyed a warm-up round with Calcot’s director of golf, Gareth Johnston, and played his shot in front of around 200 members.

His first duty as captain, was to present the Ladies’ captain, Maureen Rogers, with her captain’s jacket, and she will have her Ladies’ Captain’s Drive-in on Sunday.

Sharp and Rogers are pledging to raise money this year for the Children’s Charity, Make a Wish, which aims to grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.

Sharp has a full programme of social events planned for the year and is looking forward to the support from the all members.

  • SONNING also held their equivalent drive-in as club captain Bill Branagh, Ladies’ captain, Barbara Shanks, and Junior captain, Jack Green, struck their shots down the fairway.

This followed a 52-team, three clubs and a putter, better-ball competition played in the morning.

The winning team of Tom Shone and Will Gold scored an incredible 44 points, with the former scoring a gross 68 with his own ball.

Runners-up were Paul Siddell and Ian Gale with 42 points, while third went to Sean Green and John Cameron one point back.
