AN AMAZING eagle on the last hole at Caversham Heath gave Seamus Smith an unlikely win in Division One of the Midweek Stableford.

Smith (4hcp) looked set for a second or third place finish at best – assuming he picked up two points. However, his eagle on the 415-yard par 4 (off the white tees) gave him four points and took him straight to the top of the leaderboard.

Smith had halves of 18 and 23 points, recording 10 pars and three birdies on top of the eagle. He also secured another four-point hole plus two three-point holes and saw his handicap cut to 3.

The eagle left Mark Pattle (16hcp) devastated as he finished with 40 points and the runners-up spot. He had halves of 22 and 18 points – including a four-point hole – and could still have won had it not been for three consecutive bogeys at the end of his round. Pattle had his handicap cut to 14.

Third was David Cuthbertson (12hcp) with 37 points.

Division Two winner was Derek Pavlovic (22hcp) with 34 points, despite recording three blanks on his back nine.

Second was Jeanette Taylor (31hcp) with 32 points and third was Caroline Dover (27hcp) with 30 points.

Twos were recorded by Tom Shaw (8th hole), Stephen Gelsthorpe (17th hole) and Smith (18th hole).

  • GARY Barton (10hcp) followed up his win in the Senior Championship at Mapledurham Golf Club with an overall victory in the July Midweek Medal qualifier with a nett par round of 66.

He was also the best gross score of 77. Runner up with a nett 67, after a count back, was Daren Druce (11hcp) from Frank O’Neill (26hcp).

In Division One, Max Taxeira (11hcp) was third with nett 68 after a countback from Paul Druce (14).

Frank Perkins (18hcp) with nett 72 headed Division Two from James Newport (17hcp) on 73 followed by Peter Bagnuik (18hcp) 74.

Division Three went to O’Neill, carding a nett 67 to take the honours from Carolyn Jones (30hcp) on 69 followed by Maggie Easton (30), who scored a nett 72.

There were four birdies on the par 3 holes.
