THERE were very tight finishes in all three divisions of the weekend Stableford at Caversham Heath.

Countback was needed to decide the Division One winner, with Archie Smith (8hcp) emerging triumphant. Runner-up was Richard Craven (1hcp) and third was Will Tate (8hcp), all with 37 points.

Smith (with halves of 16 and 21 points) got the nod on countback over the back three holes, despite bogeying the last. Craven (halves of 17 and 20) recorded three birdies in his round, while a nil return on the last – the second on his back nine — proved very costly for Tate.

Division Two winner was Deighton Sear (10hcp) with 37 points. Second was Sean Houghton (16hcp), on countback from Andrew Robertson (11hcp), both with 36 points. Sear ended with three bogeys but a first nine of 20 points was enough to see him to victory.

Gordon Berry (22hcp) took the honours in Division Three with 38 points. Runner-up was Gareth Johns (21hcp) with 37 points and third was Debbie Harris (25hcp) with 36 points. Berry came home in 21 points, despite ending with three bogeys. Johns recorded 20 points on his last nine holes but a bogey, nil return, bogey finish was very costly.

Twos were recorded by Carl Bache, Stephen Beresford, Peter Holt, Karl McMullan and Gerry Rogers (all on the 8th hole) and Smith (13th hole).

  • JACK Turrill (13hcp) won Division One of the Midweek Stableford with 39 points.

Division Two winner was Jim Willison (25hcp) with 36 points. Second was Caroline Dover (27hcp), on countback from Andy Ward (28hcp), both with 34 points.

Willison scored 22 points on his front nine but hung on for victory after recording two nil returns on his back nine. Ward lost his chance with a triple bogey on his 18th hole.

The only two of the competition was recorded by John Purcell on the 8th hole.
