l CALCOT Park has recently had its par 3, 4th hole re-constructed to bring back in the features of its original course, designed by Harry Colt way back in 1930.

The club brought in golf architect Alan Walker, who is an expert on Harry Colt golf courses – of which there over 300 worldwide – including Wentworth, Stoke Park, Sunningdale and Swinley Forest.

Walker has now re-constructed the 150 yard par 3 and brought back the original bunker which used be on the far left side of the green where, before now, golfers would usually hit to the bank and watch their ball trickle down onto the green.

However, the new bunker will catch those shots and demand a more precise drive to the centre of the green.

Paul Macbeth, managing director of Macbeth Insurance Brokers in Theale, who sponsored the reconstruction, is impressed by the changes.

He commented: “We watched the development of this hole over several weeks and it is fair to say it is now a truly awesome par three.”

The hole was opened for play last weekend by the club’s officials who took turns to drive the green.

Head professional, Gareth Johnston, missed the green with his drive but still managed par. Similar plans are in hand for the club’s signature hole, the par 3, 7th.
