The ‘keeper let a weak Alexis Sanchez shot slip through his legs in extra time to condemn Reading to defeat against Arsenal - leaving the pitch in tears at full-time in a moment that tugged on the heartstrings of Royals far and wide.

Reading fans showed their class by turning up and supporting Federici during last night's game against Birmingham City, with Australian flags brought to the game by many.

He was given a massive cheer when his name was read out before the game and a fantastic reception when he ran to his goal at the start of the game.

The 30-year-old's name was also chanted throughout and he responded by making numerous fine saves, but his coveted clean sheet was ruined seven minutes from time when he was beaten by Clayton Donaldson's header to steal all three points for the visitors.

Federici admits he was nervous ahead of the game with Birmingham and had struggled for sleep since Saturday but thanked Readings’ fans for their support.

“I was pretty exhausted because I hadn’t slept much,” he said. “Yhat was the biggest mental thing.

“It was a night kick-off so we were sitting in the hotel for a long time and every possible scenario was running through my head, of course. It was great to get out there and put it to bed. Now, hopefully, I can move on and stop seeing my name everywhere.

“Last night was probably the toughest warm up I’ve had for a while and I’ve got to say a massive thank you to everyone one of the Reading supporters. They’ve been unbelievable.

“Their messages have been amazing and it makes you remember how much of a special place this club is, and how much it means to me.” The goodwill messages haven’t just flooded in from the stands, with the players also unequivocal in their support of the Australian international.

Federici is a popular member of the Reading squad and has bailed his teammates out on numerous occasions this season.

“I didn’t have a chance to speak to the lads on Saturday but I did the next day and said what I had to say to them,” he added. “Their replies were incredible and they’ve been right behind me.

“We’ve got a great group in the dressing room. There were so many kind words from all of the lads and when it’s you in that moment it doesn’t seem to sink it at all.

“I look back over the season and I’ve barely put a foot wrong and to do that in a big moment was shattering for me, as everyone could see.”
