The Woodcote school marched through the group stage in confident style as they disposed of Audenshaw, Birkenhead and Kirkham Grammar by comfortable margins last Wednesday.

The quarter final against Lancaster Grammar was a tense affair in which The Oratory trailed early on, but the running ability of Harry Davies and Iwan Macrae ensured they were always threatening with ball-in-hand and ended up 40-12 winners.

The semi-final clash saw Stonyhurst College enjoy home advantage, but they were brushed aside 40-5, with Tom Croisdale rounding off a superbly worked team try to put a further gloss on the victory.

And The Oratory saved their best performance of the season for the final as they thrashed Merchant Taylor’s Crosby 35-7.

Early tries from the big ball carrying pair of Harry Derbyshire and George Probyn put their side in control at the interval, and the second half followed suit with Charlie Williams and Will Barber controlling the game at half-back.

In fitting style, the final play of the game saw Matthew Macdonald run half the length of the pitch to score and cap a magnificent day for Mikey Hennessy and Charlie Watson’s side.

The 1st Seven also impressed, winning their group before defeating Mount St. Mary’s comprehensively in the quarter-final. However they were eventually edged out 5-3 in the last four by King’s Macclesfield.

The Oratory Prep School, though, also ended in the winners’ enclosure, as they claimed the U13 competition following an excellent day’s work.
