It looked like the 27-year-old would be heading to China after holding talks with Chinese Super League Club, Shijiazhuang Ever Bright.
But it seems that move has fallen through and Drenthe could instead end up at Erciyesspor on a one-and-a-half year deal.
Turkish media are reporting that the deal could be signed as soon as this week, though we understand that both parties are yet to come to an agreement.
It remains to be seen whether the formalities of the deal will be completed without complication and Steve Clarke admitted the door is open to a possible return recently.
The Royals boss said: "I'll never close the door on any player."
Meanwhile, Reading have strongly denied rumours of any interest in Stoke centre-back Robert Huth.
It had been suggested that Clarke would make a loan move for the German international but the Reading boss played down those rumours recently.
