The 22-year-old chased a long ball from Chris Gunter and prodded it past the advancing Dean Gerken from an acute angle to put the Royals ahead in the 26th minute.

The Ascot-born winger was evidently delighted as he ran off and kissed the badge on his chest after watching the ball roll into the corner of the net.

Reading were good value for the lead and looked strong throughout against a solid Ipswich side.

But they were indebted to Shaun Cummings in added time as Tyrone Mings' header was destined for the top corner until Cummings leapt to head the ball onto the crossbar and clear.

An added time equaliser for a second week running would've been harsh on the Royals, who defended superbly throughout, with Michael Hector's performance a particular highlight as he stepped into the centre-back role left vacant by the departure of Sean Morrison to Cardiff.

It was an even start to proceedings and Ipswich came closest to opening the scoring when former Reading man Jay Tabb sent in a corner and Berra headed it goalwards.

Obita was twice called into action to clear it off the line as he first got in the way of a David McGoldrick effort before diverting a Luke Hyam strike over the bar.

Reading had their best chance of the goalless opening in the 20th minute when a weaving Pavel Pogrebnyak run saw him cut the ball back into the six-yard box where Simon Cox and Taylor were waiting, but it was cut out at the last moment.

Taylor then went close again moments later when his shot was narrowly deflected wide after being teed up by Cox, before he broke the deadlock with an acute finish in the 26th minute.

It was Ipswich who looked the most threatening in the second-half and they missed a golden opportunity in the 64th minute when Darly Murphy poked the ball wide with Federici beaten.

The visitors pushed forward looking for an equaliser but couldn't find it, with Mings' added time header the closest they came as the Royals held on for their first three points of the season.

Adkins is sure to be delighted with his side and with bottom of the league Huddersfield Town to come on Tuesday evening, he will be confident of adding to today's victory.
