The Thai billionaire is on the verge of completing his £25 million takeover of the Royals which would see him become the club’s new owner.

Reading chairman Sir John Madejski has agreed in principle to sell 90% of the club to the 39-year-old, pending the outcome of the Football League’s Owners and Director’s Test.

The Chronicle understands the test could be completed before the end of the week which would pave the way for Bunditkitsada to complete the deal.

The takeover would allow 73-year-old Madejski, whose personal fortune has dropped from £400 million to around £100 million, to take a back seat after 24-years at the helm.

Bunditkitsada, who also owns Police United in the Thai Premier League, would then begin to make his mark at the Royals.

Reading director Nick Hammond held detailed discussions with the billionaire last week and he told the Chronicle: “It’s clear there is strong interest in the club and we’ve met with these people over a period of a few days.

“We talked a lot about the team, where we see it going and what we’d like to do in the future.

“The manager has been on holiday but we have been speaking regularly on the phone and I have passed on his feedback, which we believe is very important.

“They were very positive meetings and I am hopeful, they seem like genuine guys.”

Bunditkitsada is currently back in his native Thailand though representatives from the Asian consortium he is leading are thought to have returned to England this week for more discussions with Madejski.

Pairoj Piempongsant, previously involved in Sheikh Mansour’s purchase of Manchester City from Thaksin Shinawatra, is acting as the group’s mouthpiece at this stage.

It is believed the purchase includes the Madejski Stadium and Hogwood Park training ground. The new owners would also inherit the club’s £21 million debt following the botched takeover by Russian Anton Zingarevich, who was subsequently removed from the Royals board along with Thames Sports Investment colleagues Chris Samuelson and Andrew Obolensky.

Hammond stressed the success of the first team along with Reading’s highly-successful Academy under recent Leeds United target Eamonn Dolan remains paramount.

“There is a period of work to get through now to determined where this ends up,” he added.

“But they are very interested and they are very keen to understand the thoughts of myself and the manager regarding the first team, and what the ideal plan would be for us going forward.

“We also pointed out the Academy and particularly Category One status is crucial for our future, and we must retain that.

“They were very positive conversations in that respect.”
