The dynamic Dutchman has won his place back in Nigel Adkins’ side and has been in excellent form with two goals in his last three games.

But the 26-year-old midfielder - who is pledging his long-term future to the Royals - is willing to sacrifice personal plaudits for the sake of the team.

The ex-Real Madrid star told the Chronicle: “I’ve been pleased with my performances not only because I have scored but because I have worked hard for the team.

“That’s the most important thing for me at the moment. I am just happy to be back in the team.

“It’s true I had a really good week and I’ve played five really good games against Blackburn, Yeovil, Brighton, Leeds and Derby.

“I just want to keep going in this way because it is the most important thing for the team and for my future.”

And he stressed: “My future is with Reading and I want to keep fighting. I want to take this club as high as possible because I am a member of this club like

anyone else.

“This club is in my heart but it’s not about me. I’m happy for myself and the team spirit.”

Drenthe was Reading’s marquee signing last summer when he arrived from Russian club Alania Vladikavkaz.

But he took time to settle at Madejski Stadium and struggled to hold down a regular starting place in Adkins’ team.

However, the Dutchman has been Royals’ most lethal weapon in recent weeks and he insists there is more to come.

The 5ft 6ins trickster stated: “It’s true the more games I play the more I can do on the pitch. I’m playing in any position the gaffer wants me right now and for me it’s no problem.

“If I had to play goalkeeper, for example, I would do it because the team is most important.

“Everyone wants to be in the Premier League because it’s a beautiful thing so we have to work hard. We’re out of the play-offs but now we will give everything we can to get back up there.”

Reading slipped out of the top six last weekend after the 0-0 draw with Derby County.

But with 13 games remaining, Drenthe knows anything can still happen.

“If you saw the Derby game you would see we work together as a team, and don’t forget we’d had a really busy week,” he declared.

“We had a difficult draw at Brighton we were quite positive about then a really good win at Leeds. It would have been great to beat Derby at home but I think they are also a really good side.

“When you consider the chances both teams had it certainly wasn’t a 0-0, but that’s football.

“When I look back on that week and to my boys and my team and the staff I am still positive because we have plenty of games to go.

“We’re only looking forward now and to pick up wins and more points every game.”

Reading’s last three wins have all come away from home against Leeds, Queens Park Rangers and Millwall.

They hit the road again tomorrow when they travel to struggling Birmingham City (Saturday, 3pm ko).

Hal Robson-Kanu faces a late fitness test after limping off in the first half against Derby with a hamstring strain.

Royals also host Barnsley at the Madejski Stadium next Tuesday night (8pm ko).
