SHAUN Cummings has signed a one-year extension to his contract with Reading FC.

The 22-year-old had a year remaining on his deal but will now stay with Royals until at least 2013.

Cummings made 12 starts for Reading last season and was only once on the losing side.

The right-back played his first minutes of the 2011/12 campaign in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night and could be in line to play at Hull City this weekend.

"I have worked hard to get where I am at this club, so obviously signing a new contract with Reading is very good news," he said.

"I want to show everyone what I can do out on the pitch, so this is a good stepping stone towards proving what I am capable of.

"I know what the manager wants from me and I know his goals, which have now become my goals too. Now it's just a matter of getting out there and getting what we both want."

Reading manager Brian McDermott added: "It is a reward for his mentality. It wasn't easy for him at first, he didn't play as many games as he would have liked but he's played in some really big matches for us.

"He's done very, very well, he will keep working hard and I'm sure he will be a big player for us."
