Woodley get off to winning start

CYRIL Fairchild’s Woodley Town side took their impressive pre-season form into their Hellenic League Division One campaign by winning a seven-goal thriller against Penn & Tylers Green.

The Charvil-based side came into the league season on the back of five straight friendly wins. But they were forced to work hard to make it six on the bounce.

Woodley looked in control as they led 3-1 early in the second half but a plucky Penn side struck back to equalise. And Town needed a late goal from Tom Williams to give them all three points.

Woodley started off well and took the lead when Williams converted Dan Jewell’s cross. Chris Hurst levelled for Green before goals either side of the break from Jamie Fairchild and Luke Williams, pictured, put Town in charge.

Green hit back with a cracker from Ricci Putnam before Hurst’s second made it 3-3.

With five minutes to go Luke Williams set up Tom Williams for the decisive fourth.
