READING Town boss Roddy Slater is relishing his side’s FA Cup showdown with Newport (IoW) after they held on for a 2-1 extra-preliminary win over Warminster on Saturday.

The Scours Lane side dominated proceedings for much of the match and raced into a 2-0 lead at the break. However Warminster set up a nervy finale by getting one back with 10 minutes to go.

Town held on to book their passage into the next round. And Slater, in his first season in charge of the Hellenic Premier Division club, is looking forward to welcoming Newport to Reading next Saturday (August 28).

Slater, pictured right, said: “Bring on the next round.

“It was a very determined effort which should have resulted in a win by a wider margin.

“The closing stages were a bit nerve racking but I am fully pleased with the players.”

Hosts Warminster started brightly and it took Town 15 minutes to get into the match.

Barry Elmore started running the midfield and Danny Seaward went close with a header after a fine Jamie Jones cross.

The opening goal finally came on 38 minutes when Marcus Richardson’s shot led to a scramble in the box and Seaward was on hand to tap home.

On the stroke of half time Town double their lead when Elmore’s dangerous free-kick sailed straight into the home goal.

Reading continued to dominate after the break with Richardson and Adam Cashin-Murray going close.

But with 10 minutes to go Ashley Watkins limped off and Town -who had used all their subs - were effectively down to 10 men.

Warminster took advantage to peg one back, but Town held on for the win.
