Ritchie treble Hammers Woodley into next round

A MERE six games went ahead in the Reading & District Sunday League programme as the miserable November weather continued over into December.

Two of those encounters took place in the County Cups, with both games seeing Reading League sides make impressive progress.

In the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, Premier Division side Woodley Hammers put in a fine showing to see off Bracknell League side Athletico Priestwood 4-1.

Former Stevie B's front man Gordon Ritchie was the star of the show for Hammers as he grabbed a hat-trick to help his side into the fourth round.

The club have recently linked up with Bulmershe School and despite the overnight rain, the game got the go-ahead - and Hammers took advantage in some style.

Ritchie put the hosts ahead when he nodded home Sam Cripps' cross at the far post, and it was Cripps who gave his side a two-goal lead at the break when he fired into the corner after Mark Ashby had won the ball in midfield.

The game was made safe 10 minutes into the second half when sub Ross Smart won the ball on the edge of the area and it broke to Ritchie, who showed his quality by smashing the ball into the top corner.

Although Priestwood did pull one back, Ritchie was to have the final say running onto a through ball and calmly slotting home to send his side into the next round.
