Woodley Town 6 Wantage Town reserves 2

Woodley had a break from the league schedule and faced Wantage Town Reserves in the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup in a match which saw them produce some of their best football of the season last weekend.

They took the lead on 19 minutes with a well worked team goal, which saw left back Richard Thomas feed the ball to Tom Williams and he slipped in Jamie Fairchild who scored with an assured sidefoot finish.

But despite all their pressure Woodley did not double the lead until the 43rd minute.

From a corner, Tom Williams' header towards goal came back of the crossbar but he reacted quickly to head in the rebound.

Keeper Ben Rose made a fine reaction save from a rare Wantage attack 10 minutes into the second half and from the save Carl Davies found sub Adam Jeffery whose pass to the far left hand post was met by Luke Williams to fire home and cap an excellent individual performance.

Tom Williams got his second two minutes later in similar fashion, firing in at the far post to make it 4-0 from a Davies cross.

Some slack play cost Woodley a goal on 65 minutes when Jim Nightingale took a risk in taking on Rob Joyce on the edge of his penalty area and the forward pinched the ball and scored.

Jeffery nearly got his name on the scoresheet when his lob from a Davies cross was cleared off the goal line but the fifth came on 70 minutes when Nightingale atoned for his mistake by heading home from a corner kick.

Wantage pulled another goal back when an unmarked Brad Ritchie was left eight yards out to leave a furious Rose with no chance in the Woodley goal.

The scoring was completed on 84 minutes when Jeffery got his name on the scoreboard with a good shot from the edge of the area after cutting in to make the score 6-2 in an all action performance from Woodley, who travel to Penn and Tylers Green for their return to league action this weekend.
