Woodley bounce back after opening day defeat

WOODLEY Town enjoyed a stylish first victory in the Hellenic League on Tuesday night with a resounding 4-0 success at Chinnor.

Nick Edwards opened the scoring for last year's Reading League champions, converting an Adam Jeffrey cross just before the half hour mark.

And it was man of the match Jeffrey who doubled the lead a

minute after half-time, when his free-kick squirmed past the Chinnor keeper for his first goal for the club.

A convincing display was rounded off with two goals from substitutes in the final 20 minutes. First Steven Campbell netted with his first touch after coming on after 70 minutes, as he also registered his first goal for Woodley. And Eden Peters got the fourth with five minutes to play, clipping home a Jeffrey cross at the far post.

It was a thoroughly deserved success for Town, after their baptism of fire in the league on Saturday, when they were unlucky to slip to a 3-2 defeat at title favourites Wokingham & Emmbrook.

The league newboys made a fast start and went in front on 18 minutes, Craig Hiscock heading home after Carl Davies had headed Jeffrey's free-kick back across goal.

Wokingham responded well as expected, but debutant keeper Ben Rose made a couple of fine saves to keep them at bay.

However, the hosts drew level just before the interval when Shaun Wanklyn headed home a corner.

The Satsumas flew out of the blocks in the second half, and Luke Lee's fine finish from a tight angle put them 2-1 up.

But back came Woodley again, and they were level inside 10 minutes, Tom Williams tapping home from close range after a mix-up in the Wokingham defence.

As the pace increased in an evenly-matched game, it became more likely that a mistake or a touch of quality would be the deciding factor.

And it proved to be the latter as Wokingham's Richard Bland beat three defenders before thumping home the winner from an acute angle.

However, Woodley boss Cyril Fairchild should take comfort from the fact his league debutants pushed last year-s fourth-placed team so close in their inaugural game.
