BARTON Rovers Ladies remain unbeaten and top of the Southern Region Division One North table following a 1-1 draw with Wargrave.

Having drawn 3-3 with the same opponents a fortnight ago, it was inevitable it would be a tight game.

Both goals came in the opening 10 minutes, Barton taking the lead from a corner swung in perfectly by Phoebe Cole for Gemma Sims to strike into the top corner.

Wargrave then equalised minutes later, and while both teams had chances to win, it remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

In Division Two South of the Thames Valley Counties League, Barton Rovers Royals slipped to a 5-1 defeat at home to Newbury Development.

It was Newbury Ladies who started positively, with skipper Kendall Gilmour having a shot strike the Barton post in the sixth minute.

Alex Kovacsova reacted first to reach the rebound, but her shot also hit the same post.

The breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark for Newbury, when Alice Hill stole into the area and cut the ball back into the path of Gilmour, who made no mistake by firing in from the edge of the box.

The visitors kept the momentum at the start of the second half and they upped up the pressure on the Barton back-line. Within 10 minutes, they scored a second through Imogen Gibbons, who collected a long cross-field pass from Phoebe Gubb and then dispatched her shot coolly past the keeper.

A mix-up in the Newbury defence allowed Lauren Gotting to score and reduce the deficit, but conceding seemed to spark Newbury’s players into life as they restored their two-goal advantage just minutes later.

Gubb was again the provider, but this time it was Hill with a composed finish, and a second for her and Gilmour ensured a comprehensive victory late on.

In the Southern Region Premier League, Newbury lost 4-0 to Oxford City Ladies.
