WOODLEY United completed their Hellenic League Division One East season with a 3-2 home win against Chalfont Wasps last Wednesday – their 10th straight victory capping a superb campaign in which they earned promotion and won the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup.

The hosts started well, going close in the opening 30 seconds as Josh Drew had a shot from the right saved by Dan Little in the Chalfont goal.

On eight minutes the hosts went ahead when Charlie Oakley latched on to a long ball. Controlling it well, he beat Little with a shot into the left corner.

More United pressure followed as a short corner was worked to Jake Nicholls who missed to the right from 22 yards.

Chalfont’s best chance came courtesy of Alex Cairns, who shot into the side netting after a Tom Fifield pass split the Woodley defence.

The sides traded shots midway through the half when Oakley turned his marker before shooting wide, while Mikey Benning missed to the left from the right of the box.

The visitors ended the half with their best spell of the match.

Benning had an effort parried by Alex Reed in the home goal, but with Wasps forwards waiting to pounce, United captain Idris Kamara was alert enough to clear.

Reed then saved a header from a free-kick before keeping out a shot from danger man Benning.

The second half saw a flurry of chances that resulted in three goals in 11 minutes.

Two minutes after the restart, Benning lobbed Reed after collecting a long pass from the back, and he put his side in front soon after when volleying into the far corner from the right.

Substitute Liam Chalmers was involved in the equaliser on 56 minutes when he headed a Nicholls free-kick back to Liam Wilson who volleyed into the top left corner.

The goal revitalised Woodley, who went on to dominate the remainder of the match.

Danny Horscroft and Wilson had shots blocked as United sought the goal that would draw them level on points with champions Penn & Tylers Green.

The hosts pressed on and a Wilson cross from the left saw Oakley fire over the crossbar.

However, with 16 minutes left United retook the lead.

Picking up the ball on the half-way line, Drew ran at pace towards goal. His through ball picked out Oakley who found the left corner.

The goal was Oakley’s 30th of a season in which he won the division’s Golden Boot.

Oakley came close to a third as the game entered the final 10 minutes when a Guze through ball picked him out. Timing his run perfectly, he just had Little to beat, but the Chalfont keeper stood up to Oakley’s chip to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Chalfont had two half chances at the death as Brad Holt fired his free-kick into the wall and Reed saved at the feet of substitute Nick Little, but Woodley held on.
