AFC Aldermaston slipped to a 2-0 home defeat in their Division One East game against Chalfont Wasps on Saturday.

The visitors made the better start and took a sixth-minute lead when a corner was beautiful headed off the crossbar and into the back of the net by Kieran Webb.

Aldermaston went straight up the opposite end and created a simple chance for the recently recalled Michael Porter, but he squandered his effort, chipping the ball over the on-rushing keeper but also over the away team’s goal.

The Atom Men continued to push on and had a series of half chances and corners, and Karl Hanks then hit the outside of the post with a 20th-minute free-kick.

A few minutes later another fantastic opportunity was missed by Porter when the ball was fired across the box by Kai Parton-Edey, but the tall striker could not add to his tally as he missed from just outside the six-yard box.

Aldermaston continued to dominate at the start of the second half and Porter’s cross found Dan Alliston at the back post, only for his outstanding bicycle kick to be well saved.

Yet Chalfont always looked dangerous from set pieces and had chances to extend their lead.

In the 55th minute the Atom Men created two good chances when a ball drilled across the box by Parton-Edey was cleared for a corner, and the resulting flag-kick was then put over the bar by an unmarked Alliston.

With the ball going end-to-end and only half chances being created, Chalfont Wasps put the game beyond doubt on 80 minutes when a clearance was not dealt with by the Aldermaston back line and a quick counter attack left two Wasps players clear on goal before Mikey Benning made it 2-0.

Aldermaston battled to a creditable 2-2 draw at third-placed Headington Amateurs on Tuesday night.

The result leaves Aldermaston fifth in the table ahead of their final game of the season at Chalfont Wasps on Monday.
