WESTWOOD United crashed out of the Reading Invitation Senior Cup on Saturday, losing 6-2 at home to Bracknell Town, writes Dave Wright.

But they certainly gave the Hellenic League title chasers a few scares along the way in their second-round tie at Cotswold Sports Centre.

Ross Storrar quickly cancelled out Joe Grant’s eighth-minute header for the Robins and United forced four corners in the opening 20 minutes.

Only the alertness of Bracknell keeper Chris Grace denied Westwood further goals in the first half, most of which was played in snow flurries.

Westwood’s failure to cut out high balls cost them again on the half-hour mark when Callum Whitty, with his back to goal, headed his side back in front.

The Thames Valley Premier League Division One side, playing only their second game since Christmas, made a lively start to the second half and, with a slice of luck, would have got on level terms again.

But for the third time on a very cold afternoon they were caught out in the air, and substitute George Short nodded home to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute.

With their heads dropping and the defence giving keeper Peter Barnes little protection, they conceded two more goals in quick succession, with Adan Cornell adding the fourth before setting up Jamie McClurg for the fifth.

And Terence Bohane added Town’s sixth in the 68th minute.

Westwood, however, had the final say with Nikos Chrysikopoulos getting the credit although Town defender Alex Rodrigues appeared to get the final touch.

It was a tale of Westwood woe on Saturday, as their reserve team, who are unbeaten in TVL Division 2, lost 4-0 at Abingdon United Development in the quarter-finals of the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup.

John Dennis scored twice with Jacob Joseph and Owen Karau also on target.
