WOODLEY United exited the Supplementary Cup in the first round at Royal Wootton Bassett, falling to an agonising 2-1 extra-time defeat.

The hosts had the first half-chance when a cross-come-shot from the left was cleared on the goal line by Joe Barley, but Woodley then took over, creating the majority of chances in the first half.

On four minutes Charlie Oakley gave the visitors the lead when he found the right corner from 22 yards, and minutes later United came within inches of scoring again when Danny Horscroft headed against the bar; the ball dropped to Oakley who saw his well-hit shot blocked, taking all the power off and allowing Curtis Meare to save.

Eighteen minutes in, a lovely Woodley move involving Jake Nicholls, Greg Beckett and Horscroft ended with the latter forcing Meare into a good stop.

More United pressure followed and Beckett missed to the right before wing Carl Prestidge had a shot saved in the left corner.

The hosts were struggling to create anything and a frustrating half for them ended with Dan Comer seeing his shot from the left side of the box easily saved by debutant James McKimm.

The Woodley stopper was called into action early in the second half, but once again his save from Dale Richards’ 20-yard shot was routine.

Ten minutes after the restart Woodley had a golden chance to extend their lead. Cutting in from the left Beckett found Horscroft, who turned his marker to free up space only to see his low shot saved by Meare. The ball fell invitingly to Oakley who shot over, and he had another pair of shots saved shortly after.

Teddy Thomas saw his shot go agonisingly wide for the visitors in injury time, and they were left gutted when the Premier Division side snatched a 95th-minute equaliser, Steve Robertson firing into the right corner from the left side of the box.

Extra-time started with Dan Bailey blazing over for the hosts before Dave Morgan tested Meare from just outside the box, and Oakley then put a header over.

However, it was Bassett who took a decisive lead when Robertson controlled the ball well before deftly beating McKimm, knocking Michael Herbert’s brave men out of the competition.

Woodley United host Chinnor in Division One East on Saturday (3pm), before returning to Royal Wootton Bassett in the Floodlit Cup next Wednesday (7.45pm).

  • AFC Aldermaston were also eliminated from the Supplementary Cup as they suffered a heart-breaking 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss at Abingdon United after the two sides were locked at 2-2 after extra time.

Both sides started brightly although Abingdon were given a glorious chance to open the scoring on 15 minutes, Martin King bringing down his man to concede a penalty, only for the spot-kick to be superbly tipped wide by visiting goalkeeper Dan Smith.

The Atom Men took advantage and went into the lead six minutes later, Callum Eaton’s shot cleared off the line before Kai Parton-Edey lashed home to continue his hot streak in front of goal.

Abingdon equalised before the break in controversial fashion when King’s clearance was blocked and spun past Smith, with the officials ruling the ball had crossed the line.

The second period passed with no further goals, but it was the hosts who went in front in injury time before Liam Tackley stabbed home to send the game to penalties.

Aldermaston were 2-1 ahead before Lee Wheeler’s effort was saved, and with the spot-kicks level at 4-4, it was Connor Creegan who was denied before Abingdon scored the winner.
