Harps the main focus

JAMES Harper seems to be the focus of every conversation I have with Reading supporters these days.

Some want the central midfielder dropped, others see him as an invaluable team player. The split has been generally 50/50.

Steve Coppell has spoken exclusively to the Chronicle about the subject this week. In the interview he admits changes may be necessary but he also asks fans to lay off Harper.

To be honest, does he really deserve this level of criticism? Or is he being made a scapegoat for a few bad team performances?

Our news editor, Maurice O'Brien, brought up the subject during his regular slot on Reading 107 earlier today (Thursday).

And within 15 minutes local cabbie and lifelong Royal Andy Stevens had arrived at Chronicle Towers demanding to give O'Brien a piece of his own mind.

As it happens, both agreed that Harper, despite his faults, should play every week because of the quality he adds to the team.

But it just goes to show that, love him or hate him, Harper certainly stirs up passions!
