SLOUGH Town joint-manager Jon Underwood is still trying to figure out how the Rebels lost in a 1-0 defeat at Chippenham Town on Tuesday.

The Rebels were unfortunate not to break the deadlock at Hardenhuish Park when a header from Ben Harris, pictured, hit the post on 39 minutes.

Chippenham scored the only goal in the game as Natt Jarvis swivelled on the ball and hit home in the 68th minute.

Underwood believes Slough were the better side but, after watching the Rebels lose for the first time in National League South, admits sometimes you have those nights in football.

He told the Observer: “It was a disappointing night and I’m still trying to figure out how we lost really.

“I’m really pleased with how we played on an incredibly difficult pitch and Chippenham actually apologised for that.

“They’ve not been able to put water on it so it was rock hard and bobbly and the sort of pitch you get at the end of the season.

“It was the same for both sides and I have no excuses but we handled it really well. It made for a scrappy and close-fought game, which it always is at Chippenham, but we were the better team from start to finish.

“We played sensibly in the right areas and competed really well.

“We had the better of the chances and spent far longer in their box than Chippenham did in ours.

“We were really unlucky because the ball was ricocheting around, hitting players when they knew nothing about it, and we struck the post.

“It just would not go in for us but sometimes you have those nights in football.

“We defended really well and competed with them all over the park, so it was a fantastic effort.

“The goal we conceded was disappointing because it came from their only corner of the game.

“It was down to us and we should have dealt with it better but sometimes it’s just not your night.”
