FRANK Lampard admitted his side were fortunate to come away with all three points after Derby County inflicted a cruel late winner on Reading.

The Chelsea and England legend's managerial debut ended in a lively 2-1 victory and could well have ended in a win for Paul Clement's side, who took the lead in the second half through Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's header.

Lampard said: "You could see from the celebrations at the end how much that means to us all. They came at us. They were organised and didn't allow us to play our game.

"They caused us to be too slow on the ball and then when we gave it away to them they broke on us pretty quickly.

"I said we need more urgency. They are difficult games, but if we are going to play into their trap of moving the ball too slow across our back line, it is not enjoyable to watch and we are waiting to lose the ball and for them to counter us.

"We needed to quicken up our game and show some more urgency.

"Reading didn't deserve to lose, but we had a reaction when they scored to get back into the game."

Derby responded almost immediately through a slice of luck, as Mason Mount's long-range effort slipped through the grasp of Vito Mannone.

While Clement was left frustrated by the lack of impact from his substitutes, Lampard was able to call on young Mason Bennet.

Reading Chronicle:

The 22-year-old slipped behind Reading's defence in the 94th minute and put in a perfect cross for Tom Lawrence, who sparked huge celebrations from Derby's 2,000 travelling fans.

"It was an interesting start," added a relieved Lampard.

"That is what I am back in the game for. It is not going to happen every week, I am fully aware of that. Those feelings are incredible.

"It is hard to compare [winning as manager compared to winning as a player] but that is right up there with what I have done in my career.

"I don't want to get carried away. You work hard and you feel a responsibility for the team that you put out."

Mannone made a strong save to keep out a fierce half-volley from Harry Wilson with 10 minutes remaining, but his earlier attempt to keep out Mount's shot from outside the area ended up being costly.

While Reading's back line tired, Derby appeared invigorated going forward and the fatigue of the Royals defence allowed Bennett the space to work a cross into Lawrence.

Lampard added: "Mason Mount has got great quality and energy and he is going to get better and better. You maybe get a slice of luck and the goalkeeper could maybe do better.

"He [Bennett] came on and he tested them behind the line. The run, the cross and obviously Tom's header was perfection.

"But Mason Bennet is the one who needs massive praise. I have been really impressed with him and I am delighted for him.

"It is absolutely crucial that people come on with a positive attitude. The cross was out of nowhere.

"I have got a desire to improve and we will go forward as a group doing that."
