Reading FC fans have reacted to midfielder Joey van den Berg's loan move away from Madejski Stadium.

The 32-year-old was told to find a new club this summer after falling down the pecking order since Reading parted company with Jaap Stam.

The tough-tackling midfielder, who also filled in at centre back under Stam's stewardship, he has now joined Dutch side N.E.C Nijmegen on a season-long loan.

Van den Berg's contract at Madejski Stadium expires next year and he will be offered an additional year as part of the deal with Nijmegen.

The Dutchman divided opinions in a Reading shirt, but fans have expressed their gratitude to him as he makes the move away.

Van den Berg joined on a free transfer in 2016 as part of Stam's Dutch revolution in Berkshire.

He came under fire from supporters following some costly mistakes at the back.

Nevertheless, Van den Berg was a key part of the side which made it to the Championship play-off final before being cruelly beaten by Huddersfield Town on penalties.

He found first-team opportunities more difficult to come by last season but will be remembered for a thunderbolt of a strike against Barnsley at Madesjki Stadium.

Van den Berg was told to find a new club by new boss Paul Clement this summer after the 46-year-old decided he was no longer needed.
